Letter from Fr. John
Dear Members of the Notre Dame Family:
In times of economic stress, we must redouble our efforts to help those in need. While we may be optimistic about a recovery, others are struggling for basic necessities as food stockpiles dwindle at local soup kitchens and some people with failing health must choose between dinner and medicine.
Possibly the greatest asset of Notre Dame and its employees is that both are ready to serve and build their community whenever there is a need. Today, we have such an opportunity in the form of the 201 I campaign for the United Way of St. Joseph County. The University tradition of teaming with the United Way continues to build connections among many local partners who work to improve our community'S education, incomes and health. Our commitment to these excellent service providers echoes the "Live United" campaign theme.
Notre Dame and its employees have embraced the campaign for years and become a crucial factor in the success of each effort. The goal for this year is set at $300,000. The money raised helps to meet basic needs like food and shelter, keep families' livelihoods sustainable through literacy and work skills, and fight social problems like sexual and domestic abuse. Donors can direct their contribution to one of four broad program areas: education, financial stability, basic needs or health.
One part of the campaign more directly relates to your coworkers -- 5 percent of your total donation goes to the Notre Dame's Employee Compassion Fund to help members of our University family who face an emergency need. This fund has been used in past employee emergencies, such as funeral expenses for a family member and boarding up a home after a fire.
The economic crisis has affected everyone in some way, but it has a magnified effect on those living on the edges of our society. Local groups that help keep people from falling over that edge are reporting an increase in demand for their support. The United Way responds to this need and partners with Notre Dame to strengthen our community.
I ask you to consider contributing generously when the 20 I I campaign kicks off. Please join Notre Dame in helping the United Way campaign reach new heights this year.
In Notre Dame,
Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C.
President
